Why is understanding macros so important when it comes to nutrition?
Macros are the basic building blocks for calories. Yes, they are a lot more then that, such as providing microminerals, vitamins, and playing major roles in hormonal balance, muscle repair, recovery, and a whole lot more. But let's focus on calories for now. Every plate of rice and beans you eat, every potato, french fry, burger, vegan patty, protein shake, protein bar, all of them have calories. Every single one of them also has different quantities of fats, protein, and carbs. You can find the amount on the nutrition label.
When you add up the calories each macronutrient provides, that's when you get the total calories for that product. Macronutrients are fats, carbs, and proteins. In today's world, I'll say that sugar alcohol's are their own macros. Alchohol is also a macronutrient but we're going to reframe from drinking for now ::SMILE::.
When you eat a fruit or piece of steak, the entire steak is not all calories unless you dry it out and compact it into a dry patty. The more water you get out of it and the more dense it becomes then the more calories it'll have per gram or ounce. This is why a fruit, even though it may weight 3 ounces, it'll only have about 20-30 grams of carbs. The rest is water.
